Ağrı Dağı Milli Parkı
The 88,014-hectare area encompassing Ağrı Dağı; home to Turkey's highest mountain and its largest glacier; and its surroundings was declared a national park in 2004 and placed under protection. The park extends within the provinces of Ağrı and Iğdır and the districts of Doğubayazıt, Aralık and Karakoyunlu. Located in the Irano-Turanian phytogeographic region, the park displays a variety of vegetation formations ranging from steppe, mountain steppe, subalpine and alpine meadows to forest. Above 2,000 meters there are mountain steppes, and above 4,000 meters mostly snow-covered summits. A relict birch forest is found on the northern slopes of Küçük Ağrı. Of the more than 500 plant species identified to date, 52 are endemic; milkvetch, prickly thrift, thyme and wormwood are among the herbaceous species dominating the steppes. One of Turkey's most sought-after summits for mountaineering and climbing enthusiasts, Ağrı Dağı is also suitable for hiking and cycling routes. It is 40 km from the city center of Iğdır and 15 km from the district of Doğubayazıt.
