Aras ve Karasu Taşkınları Sulak Alanı
Stretching along the border with Nakhchivan and Armenia in the Aralık district of Iğdır, the Aras and Karasu Floodplains Wetland is a 9,090-hectare protected area declared a wetland of national importance in 2016. It encompasses the Aras River on the Armenian and Nakhchivan border, the Karasu River on the Iranian border, and the wide floodplain extending between these two rivers. At an altitude of about 813 meters, this border geography offers a distinctive nature with its halophytic steppe habitats and riparian vegetation. The area hosts rich biodiversity. 119 plant taxa as well as 129 invertebrate and 22 reptile species have been recorded. The wetland's real value, however, is its bird life: 110 bird species have been identified to date. Its location on an important bird migration route makes the spring and autumn periods extremely favorable for observation; the area is particularly nourishing for songbirds. There are no facilities in the area, which is about 67 km from Iğdır city center; visits take place entirely in a natural setting.
