Bafa Gölü Tabiat Parkı
Once a gulf of the Aegean Sea in antiquity, Lake Bafa was cut off from the sea by the alluvium carried by the Büyük Menderes River and turned into a lake; it was declared a nature park in 1994 with an area of 12,281 hectares. In the park, located in Aydın's Söke district, the lake's shoreline strip holds the status of a first-degree natural protected site. Surrounded by Ilbıra to the south and the majestic Beşparmak Mountains to the north, the lake stands out with its surface of 6,721 hectares and a depth reaching 25 meters. The area's cultural heritage is as impressive as its natural richness: the ancient cities of Heraklia and Latmos, along with the Byzantine-era monasteries and defensive structures on the islands within the lake, make the park a destination intertwined with history. With 325 plant species, 261 bird, 22 reptile and 19 mammal species, Lake Bafa offers unique opportunities for birdwatching, boat trips, nature hiking and photography.
