Beydağları Sahil Milli Parkı
Established in 1972, the 31,165-hectare Beydağları Coastal National Park lies along a unique coastal strip stretching from Tünektepe in Antalya's Konyaaltı to the Gelidonya Lighthouse. The settlements of Beldibi, Göynük, Kemer, Tekirova, Çamyuva and Adrasan are in the park's immediate vicinity. The region, where the young mountains of the Western Taurus meet the Mediterranean coast, is notable for its limestone and serpentine formations. Known as Lycia in antiquity, the region has been settled since prehistoric times, as the finds in the Beldibi Cave attest. Phaselis (Tekirova) and Olympos, founded in the 7th century BC, are the park's most important ancient cities. The natural gas that escapes from the crevices near Olympos and has been burning for centuries is known as the Eternal Flame of Lycia and, through the Chimaira myth, lends the area a mythological significance. The ancient cities of Idyros, Gagai and Chimaera as well as Adrasan Harbor are also worth seeing. The vegetation, beginning with stone pines along the seashore, gives way with altitude to Turkish red pine, black pine and, above 1000 meters, cedar trees. More than a thousand plant species and 21 endemic species live in the park; the Turkish red pine forests on Tahtalı Mountain are of international importance. With boat tours, diving, walking and cycling routes, it offers the nature of sea and mountains together.
