Dönemeç Deltası Sulak Alanı
The Dönemeç Delta Wetland is a nationally important wetland of 7,692 hectares located at the southeastern tip of Lake Van, within the Edremit and Gevaş districts of Van. The delta, whose management plan was completed in 2017, harbors a rich ecosystem where lake and valley meet. The Engil Stream, flowing through the reedbeds, is not only the most important source feeding the area but also the principal breeding ground of the near-threatened endemic pearl mullet. In the delta, where around 68 plant species grow, 139 bird species have been identified; the globally threatened white-headed duck breeds here. In this respect, the area stands out for birdwatching and nature photography; day hikes and photo safaris are also among the activities that can be enjoyed. The delta, 27 kilometers from the Van city center, 12 kilometers from Gevaş, and 15 kilometers from Edremit, can be reached by private vehicle or by the Gevaş municipal buses.
