Göksu Deltası Ramsar Alanı
The 22,844-hectare Göksu Delta, formed at the point where the Göksu River meets the Mediterranean within the boundaries of Mersin's Silifke district, is one of the most important wetlands of the Mediterranean. The area was declared a Special Environmental Protection Zone in 1990 and, in 1994, gained Ramsar status under the framework of wetlands of international importance for waterbirds; 15,000 hectares of this area are under Ramsar protection. The delta possesses extremely rich flora and fauna diversity of international conservation value. 404 taxa have been identified in its flora, including numerous endemic, rare and threatened species; the threatened sea daffodil is foremost among them. In this respect, the delta offers a unique ecosystem for wildlife observation and nature tours. Road access to the delta is via the Silifke-Taşucu-Atakent route; it is about 17 km from Silifke center and about 80 km from the Mersin city center. As access within the area runs along coastal and service roads, controlled entry to sensitive zones is recommended, especially during the busy summer season.
