Gönen Deltası Sulak Alanı
Located in the Gönen district of Balıkesir, the Gönen Stream Delta Wetland is a typical delta ecosystem formed by the alluvium carried by Gönen Stream, one of the freshwater sources feeding the Sea of Marmara. The lagoons formed where the stream meets the sea create important breeding and feeding areas for waterbirds. Protected as a wetland of national importance, the delta, although not a registered Ramsar site, meets the Ramsar criteria by hosting threatened waterbirds such as the pygmy cormorant and the Dalmatian pelican. Surveys have identified 16 fish, 12 reptile, 195 bird and 35 mammal species within the delta, revealing just how rich the wildlife the region hosts is. The plant and animal communities specific to the delta ecosystem make the area a valuable spot for birdwatching and nature photography.
