Hersek Lagünü Sulak Alanı
Stretching along the Marmara coast in Yalova's Altınova district, Hersek Lagoon is a valuable wetland that, with its area of 1,522 dönüms, holds the distinction of being Turkey's only title-deeded lake. With its salinity, underwater diversity and temperate waters it is a true bird paradise, and in 2016 it was registered as a Wetland of Local Importance. 255 bird species have been recorded in the lagoon. An important breeding ground for the yellow-legged gull, Mediterranean gull, gull-billed tern and tern species, the site is the country's only nesting point for shorebirds such as the oystercatcher, little ringed plover and common sandpiper. A shelter, feeding and breeding area for waterbirds, the lagoon sees its busiest period in the winter months. Alongside its natural richness, it is also home to a deep-rooted history. In the courtyard of the Hersekzade Ahmet Paşa Mosque near the lagoon stand centuries-old trees, and with a past of more than 500 years it accompanies the surrounding Ottoman monuments. The Osmangazi Bridge rises right beside the lagoon. The park is an ideal spot for birdwatching and nature walks.
