Kızılırmak Deltası Ramsar Alanı
Stretching across 21,700 hectares in the Bafra district of Samsun, where the Kızılırmak meets the Black Sea, the Kızılırmak Delta is one of Turkey's most important wetlands, declared a Ramsar Site in 1998. Fourteen different habitats formed by reed beds, brackish and freshwater lake mirrors, wet meadows, dunes, salt marshes, and flooded forests turn the delta into a unique wildlife refuge. To date, 358 bird species have been recorded in the delta. Species such as the crane, purple swamphen, purple heron, spoonbill, gadwall, red-crested pochard, and ferruginous duck make the area a world-class bird-watching paradise. Within the Wildlife Development Area there are a visitor center, a video monitoring center, bird-watching towers, a cafeteria, a bird-ringing station, and a wildlife first-aid clinic. Visitors can enjoy bird watching, nature hiking, cycling tours, picnics, and nature photography. Arriving from Bafra via the Doğanca or 19 Mayıs Yörükler Mahallesi entrances, the area can be toured from the parking lot onward with the municipality's shuttle vehicles.
