Kızören Obruğu Ramsar Alanı
Located about 75 km northeast of Konya, just beyond the township of Obruk, Kızören Obruğu is an impressive karst formation roughly 300 meters in diameter and 145 meters deep, created by the dissolution of limestone. In 2006, the sinkhole and its surroundings, covering 127 hectares, were declared a Ramsar Site. The lake, formed as water filled the sinkhole, holds fresh water since it is fed by springs at its base, and with colors that change at every hour of the day it is a natural wonder that those traveling between Konya and Cappadocia should not pass by without seeing. The surrounding plateau, covered with barren hills, steppes, and wide plains, is home to waterbirds and rich steppe life. The region has not only natural but also historical depth: the first settlement dates back to the 13th century, and stones from the Byzantine period were used in the walls of the local inn (han). The area is reached by turning off toward Obruk village at the 70th kilometer of the Konya-Aksaray highway.
