Kuyucuk Gölü Ramsar Alanı
One of the four wetlands within the borders of Kars, Lake Kuyucuk was declared our country's 13th Ramsar site in 2009. Taking its name from the village on its shore, the lake hosts a rich flora and fauna with its 240-hectare water surface and 416-hectare registered area. Its location on the Asia-Europe bird migration routes makes the lake a critical stopover for birds. Serving as a resting and breeding ground for 7 endangered species and a great number of bird species makes Kuyucuk one of Turkey's important spots for birdwatching and photo safaris. Mountain-steppe vegetation dominates the surroundings; species such as mountain tulip, may flower, mountain hyacinth and snowdrop make up the area's flora, while no tree species are found. The lake is reached by private vehicle via the Kars-Akyaka Border Gate highway; after traveling about 15.5 km, you leave the road and arrive at the Bird Observation Tower. Access is also possible by district minibuses.
