Meke Gölü Tabiat Anıtı
Meke Lake, located in the Karapınar district of Konya with an area of 256.95 hectares, was declared a natural monument in 1998 and also holds Ramsar area status. In the middle of the lake, formed by a volcanic eruption about 5 million years ago, there are islets. Although there are many crater lakes in Turkey, the bitterness of the water within the caldera makes Meke a rare example of its kind. With its shape resembling an evil-eye bead, the lake is known as the "Eye of Anatolia." The lake, in the midst of the saline steppes of Central Anatolia, is home to drought-resistant steppe vegetation and species such as milk-vetch, wormwood and sage; while its surroundings host birds adapted to the volcanic character, such as ruddy shelduck, common shelduck, Egyptian vulture, long-legged buzzard and golden eagle. This unique landscape offers an impressive scene for nature tours, bird watching and photography. The Meke Lake Natural Monument is located at the 100th kilometer of the Konya-Adana road, about 1 km from the main road.
