Termessos Milli Parkı
Located 30 km northwest of Antalya, on the 1,665-metre summit of Güllük Mountain, Termessos National Park was declared in 1970 over an area of 6,702 hectares and is an extraordinary meeting of archaeology and nature. On this mountain summit covered with dense beech and juniper forests rises an eagle's-nest city dating from the 4th century BC: Termessos, the capital of the Pisidians, is known as the only city Alexander the Great could not conquer. The ancient city contains a theatre for 4,200 people, an agora, the Temple of Hadrian, five large cisterns, a gymnasium and a necropolis with more than 1,500 monumental tombs. Carved from local limestone and fitted to the folds of the mountain, most of the structures are covered in ivy, offering an atmosphere much like a lost city. A rich nature reserve with forests of beech, Calabrian pine, cedar and Taurus juniper, the park is home to Turkey's largest wild goat population; lucky visitors can watch the goats climbing the cliffs from the upper seats of the theatre. The lynx, cinereous vulture and rock partridges are also among the area's notable species. The best season is between April and June and September and November; in the summer months this altitude is a few degrees cooler than Antalya.
