Akgöl Sulak Alanı
The Akgöl Wetland is a high-altitude mountain and lake ecosystem spread over an area of approximately 1,203 hectares within the boundaries of the Özalp district of Van. Registered in 2015, the area hosts rich wildlife thanks to its location close to steppe habitat. In the flora, approximately 30 plant species are recorded, among them the endemic etek karanfili, found only in this region. The fauna is quite diverse: reptile and mammal species are frequently observed in the area; in addition, around 80 bird species have been identified together with fish species in the endangered and vulnerable categories; this richness makes the area attractive for photo safaris. Welcoming visitors within the scope of nature tourism, Akgöl offers activities such as day hikes, picnicking and photography. The nearest settlement to the area, approximately 81 km from the center of Van and 21 km from Özalp, is Akgöl Mahallesi; transportation is provided by private vehicle or local minibuses.
