Akyatan Gölü Ramsar Alanı
Declared in 1998, the 14,700-hectare Lake Akyatan Ramsar Site is a unique wetland stretching along the shore of the Seyhan Delta in the Karataş district of Adana. Also granted Wildlife Development Area status in 2005, the area ranks among the foremost bird sanctuaries of international importance. The Akyatan Lagoon is one of the areas in Türkiye where the largest numbers of waterbirds overwinter, and it is considered one of the country's most important wintering sites for the endangered crane. In the dunes adorned with stone pine, maritime pine, eucalyptus and sea daffodil live the jungle cat, jackal, fox, crested porcupine and sea turtles. Many waterbirds such as the great white pelican, cormorant and great crested grebe also make the delta their home, creating an exceptional nature-tour route for birdwatchers. The area is reached at a distance of approximately 18 km from the Karataş district center and 56 km from the Adana city center.
