Ballıkayalar Tabiat Parkı
Declared in 1995, Ballıkayalar Nature Park is a deep canyon valley in Kocaeli's Gebze district, formed by the dissolution of limestone. The karstic gorge valley harbors rich biological, ecological and geomorphological diversity and stands out for its flora and fauna. At the heart of the park, in the southern section, lies the Ballıkayalar valley. Along the walls of this canyon, about 2 km long and varying between 40-80 meters in width, the hollows, cavities and giant potholes formed by the stream dissolving the limestone offer the park's most impressive views together with the surrounding natural vegetation. Species such as gall oak above all, along with Hungarian and kermes oaks, hornbeam, chestnut, maple, linden, plane and Scots pine envelop the valley. Ideal for rock climbing, nature hiking and cycling, the park is very convenient in terms of transport. The D-100 highway and the E-80 TEM motorway pass about 4 km south of the park; it can easily be reached via the Tavşanlı exit.
