Gazilerdağı Tabiat Parkı
Located in the Gaziler neighbourhood in Kocaeli's Gebze district, Gazilerdağı Nature Park was declared in 2013. Despite being surrounded by dense urban fabric, it is a lush green patch of forest protected from all these pressures, covered with pine, poplar, and juniper trees. It is a breathing space for those wanting to get away from the pace of the city. The upper layer consists of maritime pine and black pine, while the lower layer is made up of species such as oak, juniper, aspen, strawberry tree, mastic tree, and rosehip. With species such as the jay, blackbird, sparrowhawk, buzzard, hare, and squirrel, wildlife is also lively. Within the park there are an equestrian training centre, a country restaurant, a kiosk, a prayer room, toilets, children's playgrounds, walking trails, basketball, volleyball, and football pitches, and picnic areas. It is an ideal day-trip stop for nature walks, cycling, horseback rides, picnics, and barbecues. It is 55 km from İzmit and 45 km from Istanbul, and is easily reached from within Gebze and via the D-100 and the TEM.
