Boğazköy-Alacahöyük Tarihi Milli Parkı
Declared in 1988, Boğazköy-Alacahöyük Historical National Park, in the Boğazkale district of Çorum, protects Hattuşaş (Boğazköy), the capital of the Hittites, one of Anatolia's oldest civilizations. The city walls, the Lion Gate, Yer Kapı and the Yazılıkaya open-air temple are among the park's principal historical monuments. Hattuşaş was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list in 1986; the cuneiform tablet archives found at the site have been on the UNESCO Memory of the World list since 2001. This dual registration makes the park one of Turkey's cultural and natural assets with the highest protection status. Within the area there are walking trails, an open-air museum of the Hittite Empire and an archaeology museum. In the park, which lies under the influence of the Irano-Turanian plant geography, 215 plant species have been identified, roughly one fifth of them endemic. Bird diversity is also rich; various sources record up to 79 bird species around Hattuşa. The park, 86 km from the center of Çorum and 155 km from Merzifon Airport, is easily reached by asphalt road. Walking routes, gastronomy tours and guided excursions bring history together with nature; the best season is April to October.
