Göreme Tarihi Milli Parkı
Göreme Historical National Park, declared a national park in 1986 with its unique 9,572-hectare volcanic landscape in the town of Göreme in Nevşehir and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list the same year, is one of Turkey's best-known routes on the international stage, both naturally and culturally. The tuff layer spewed out by Erciyes and Hasandağı millions of years ago was shaped by wind and water erosion into fairy chimneys, pointed conical towers, canyons and carved rock masses. With the churches, monasteries and underground settlements carved by Christian monks in the Byzantine era added on top, the unique silhouette of Cappadocia emerged. Within the park's boundaries lie the fresco-adorned rock churches of the Göreme Open-Air Museum, the Zelve Open-Air Museum and the fairy chimneys of Paşabağı. The Güvercinlik, Kızılçukur, Aşk, Bağlıdere and Meskendir valleys offer half- to full-day walking routes. The hundreds of hot-air balloons rising from sunrise onward form Cappadocia's signature image. The park, 35 km from Nevşehir Cappadocia Airport and 75 km from Kayseri Airport, is among the most popular stops for balloon tours, nature walks, cycling and ATV trips.
