İğneada Longoz Ormanları Milli Parkı
Located in the town of İğneada in the Demirköy district of Kırklareli, near the Bulgarian border, on the coast where the Yıldız Mountains descend to the Black Sea, İğneada Longoz Forests National Park is a 3,155-hectare special natural area declared Turkey's 39th national park in 2007. The park protects the longoz forest, that is, floodplain forest ecosystem, which survives at very few spots in Europe. Streams descending from the Yıldız Mountains end in the lakes and marshes of the İğneada plains without reaching the sea. In the spring months, the excess water from the streams overflows the lakes, covers the plain and, remaining for weeks, creates the flooded forest ecosystem; the trees stay under water for part of the year. The area contains the Erikli, Mert, Deniz and Saka lagoon lakes and the Hamam and Pedina inland lakes. The coastal dune strip between the sea and the forest forms the most sensitive ecosystem, where rare plants such as the sand lily grow. The fauna includes 194 bird species, records of the Mediterranean monk seal, the otter, jackal, roe deer, brown bear and wolf. The park is also an important migration point where eagles, vultures and storks are observed intensively in spring and autumn; in the forest covered by ash, beech, alder and oak, nature walks and birdwatching stand out.
