İğneada Longoz Ormanları Milli Parkı (Batı Bölümü)
This area, located in the town of İğneada in the Demirköy district of Kırklareli, covers the western and southern sections of İğneada Longoz Forests National Park. It is the second of the two official sections of the 3,155-hectare whole declared Turkey's 39th national park in 2007, and it protects the longoz forest, that is, floodplain forest ecosystem, which survives at very few spots in Europe. Streams descending from the Yıldız Mountains end in the lakes and marshes of the İğneada plains without reaching the sea. In the spring months, the incoming excess water overflows the lakes, covers the plain and, remaining for weeks, creates the flooded forest ecosystem; the trees stay under water for part of the year. In this section, the Erikli and Mert lakes are especially dominant. The lagoon lakes are separated from the sea by dune barriers; the coastal dune strip forms the most sensitive ecosystem, where rare plants such as the sand lily grow. The main species of the flora are ash, alder, elm and pedunculate oak; by developing breathing structures in their roots, they represent a special forest type able to live under water. The fauna includes 194 bird species, records of the Mediterranean monk seal, the otter, jackal, roe deer, brown bear and wolf. The park, where eagles, vultures and storks are observed intensively in spring and autumn, is a unique route for nature walks and birdwatching.
