Kaçkar Dağları Milli Parkı
With its area of 52,967 hectares, Kaçkar Mountains National Park, stretching between the provinces of Rize, Artvin and Erzurum, is one of Turkey's most important natural areas. Declared a national park in 1994, the region is recognized not only nationally but also internationally for its wildlife, plant richness and geomorphological formations; it has been designated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) as one of the 200 ecological regions and 9 hotspots in the world that must be protected. With peaks reaching about 4,000 meters just 30 km inland from the sea, glacial lakes and alpine meadows, the park offers a unique high-mountain landscape. Roughly one third of the area is covered with forests and hosts 756 plant taxa, 54 of them endemic. Turkey's most popular routes for hiking, mountain climbing and scenic viewing are found here. Most of the park lies in the Çamlıhemşin district, 65 km from Rize. Visitors enter via the Ayder and Zilkale entrances, while access from the Erzurum and Artvin side is via Olgunlar Village.
