Karkamış Taşkın Ovası Sulak Alanı
The Karkamış Floodplain Wetland is a wetland of national importance stretching along the bed of the Euphrates River around the Karkamış and Nizip districts of Gaziantep. Placed under protection in 2015, the area covers the river bed between the Birecik and Karkamış dams and the riparian floodplain tree stands lining the banks. At an altitude of 385 meters, the region harbors a very rich diversity of aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals. The area, which can be explored via the roads following the villages along the Euphrates, is a rewarding stop for nature observers. In addition to species such as wild boar, fox and salamander, it hosts numerous bird species, making the region ideal for bird watching and nature photography. The area can be reached from the Gaziantep side via the Nizip district road and the Karkamış district road. Entry is free of charge; the area can be visited throughout the week between 08:00 and 17:00.
