Manyas Kuş Cenneti Milli Parkı
Stretching across 64 hectares within the boundaries of Sığırcı village on the northeastern shore of Lake Manyas (Kuş) near the Bandırma district of Balıkesir, Manyas Kuş Cenneti National Park, declared in 1959, is one of Turkey's oldest and smallest national parks. Despite its small size, it is a habitat recognized on a global scale: in 1976 it was awarded the Council of Europe's 'Class A Diploma', making it the only site in Turkey to hold this international recognition. Lake Manyas is one of the most critical stopover points on the Caucasus-Africa bird migration route. More than 250 bird species have been recorded in and around the park; the great white pelican, Dalmatian pelican, spoonbill, cormorant, heron species, stork and flamingo are the best known among them. Spring is the nesting season, and the colonies in the trees can be seen clearly from the observation tower; autumn, in turn, is the stage for migrating flocks filling the sky. The visitor center at the park entrance houses an exhibition of bird species, an audiovisual presentation hall and live camera screens showing the nests. Beyond the center, a 300-meter wooden walkway leads to the observation tower over the lake; from here, birdwatching is done with binoculars or telescopes. The reed marshes among the willows, poplars, ashes and elms form the critical habitat for bird life. The visitor center and the observation tower are accessible for visitors with disabilities. Bandırma city center is 18 km from the park; the best seasons are the spring nesting period and the autumn migration period.
