Manyas (Kuş) Gölü Ramsar Alanı
The Manyas (Kuş) Lake in Balıkesir is a bird paradise that, after Turkey became a party to the Ramsar Convention in 1994, entered the list of wetlands of international importance first with its eastern part and then, in 1998, in its entirety covering 20,400 hectares. Within the area lies Kuşcenneti National Park, declared the country's fourth national park in 1959; in 1976 it was awarded the Class A European Diploma by the Council of Europe because of the natural values it possesses. Hosting millions of birds each year, the lake is home to around 105 breeding bird species, foremost among them the Dalmatian pelican, as well as cormorant, mallard, teal, grey heron, spoonbill and bittern. Particularly the reed beds and willow groves in the delta where the Sığırcı Stream flows into the lake are favorable for the breeding and feeding of thousands of birds. For visitors there is a reception center and, allowing bird observation, a 17-meter-high observation tower. The national park is 18 km from the district of Bandırma and 35 km from the district of Manyas. Kuşcenneti is reached via a 2-kilometer road branching off to the west at the 16th kilometer of the Bandırma-Balıkesir highway.
