Munzur Vadisi Milli Parkı
Munzur Valley National Park, stretching through the Ovacık district of Tunceli, was placed under protection in 1971. With its area of 42,674 hectares, it is one of Turkey's largest national parks. Starting 8 kilometers west of the Tunceli provincial center, it encompasses the Munzur Valley for 46 kilometers and, toward the north, the Munzur Mountains. The geological structure of the Munzur Mountains, rising between the Karasu and Murat depression basins, consists of metamorphic, volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Reaching 3,300 meters in the north, this mountainous area is deeply dissected by the valleys of the Mercan and Munzur streams. The glacial lakes in the upper reaches of the Mercan Valley, the springs welling up on the Ovacık plain and the small waterfalls cascading along the valley are the park's most striking landscape features. The hills and slopes are covered with oak forests; on the valley floor, walnut, alder, ash, elm, plane, poplar and willow form rich vegetation. Its wildlife shelters species such as wolf, fox, bear and chukar partridge, as well as rare species such as wild goat, chamois, lynx, otter and golden eagle. The Munzur stream and the Mercan Valley are remarkably rich in trout. With hiking routes, scenic viewing and activities such as ziplining, the valley welcomes visitors in every season.
