Sarıkum Tabiatı Koruma Alanı
Located in the central district of Sinop, the Sarıkum Nature Conservation Area is a rare natural treasure that combines sea, coast, dune, lake, wetland, and forest ecosystems. Sarıkum Gölü, which gives the area its name, is a lagoon formed when the mouth of a former bay was closed off by coastal dunes carried by northwesterly winds, and it is still connected to the sea through a narrow channel of 25-30 meters. The lake and its surroundings, encompassing different habitats, are an extremely favorable feeding and wintering ground for birds. In the winter months, the white-headed duck and more than twenty thousand waterbirds stop over here; throughout the migrations, the passage of different species each month increases the bird diversity of the area. The Sinop Peninsula, which includes Sarıkum, is one of Turkey's 144 Important Plant Areas. Offering the most suitable routes for birdwatching, hiking, photography, and wildlife observation, the area is 21 km from the city center of Sinop and only 2 km from the Sinop-Ayancık highway.
