Tortum Gölü ve Şelalesi Sulak Alanı

Uzundere, Erzurum

4.6

Stretching along the Tortum Stream, one of the side branches of the Çoruh Valley, in the Uzundere district of Erzurum, the 2,709-hectare Tortum Lake Wetland was placed under protection in 2017. The area encompasses both Tortum Waterfall, one of Eastern Anatolia's most magnificent natural phenomena, and Tortum Lake. The lake formed naturally in the mid-1700s, when a mountain blocked the Tortum Stream as the result of a landslide, turning it into a mountain lake 8 km long and 1 km wide. In places its depth exceeds 100 meters. Tortum Waterfall, one of Turkey's highest natural waterfalls, plunges steeply from a height of 50 meters and, depending on the angle of the sun in the morning and afternoon, creates a natural rainbow. The waterfall's strongest flow season is between May and August, when snowmelt and spring rains combine. The lake is known for its trout population and allows licensed fishing. Facilities such as a birdwatching tower, a glass terrace, a zipline, canoeing and fish restaurants offer visitors modern nature tourism opportunities. The glass terrace extending directly over the waterfall is one of the most popular experiences. It is 106 km from central Erzurum and 9 km from the Uzundere district center.
