Acıgöl Ulusal Sulak Alanı
Registered as a wetland of national importance in 2015, Acıgöl is a shallow tectonic lake stretching between Maymun Mountain to the north and the Söğüt Mountains to the south. Administratively located within the boundaries of the Çardak district of Denizli and the Başmakçı and Dazkırı districts of Afyonkarahisar, the lake has a character whereby its water decreases and it dries up in places during the summer season; it is fed by the small streams of the surrounding mountains and the Gemiş water source. Acıgöl and its surroundings are an important area especially for halophytic plants and harbour many plant species endemic to our country. Species such as Saponaria halophila and Sphaerophysa kotschyana are under protection within the scope of the Bern Convention, and Saponaria halophila is a globally endangered species. Halophytic plants such as glasswort and seepweed shape the shoreline. With its rich biological diversity, Acıgöl is a natural area well suited to birdwatching.
