Ahlat Sazlığı Sulak Alanı
Declared a wetland of national importance in 2015, the 243-hectare Ahlat Sazlığı is located within the boundaries of the Ahlat district of Bitlis, on the southwestern slope of Mount Süphan and on the northwestern shore of Lake Van. With its basin encompassing the lake, reed beds and marshes, agricultural lands and rural settlements, it offers a rich habitat. Home to many bird species, the reed bed is an ideal spot for birdwatching and wildlife photography. In the area, 5 fish species (2 of them endemic), 12 mammal species and 111 plant species (1 of them endemic) have been identified; the pearl mullet (Alburnus tarichi), endemic to Lake Van, migrates to Ahlat Sazlığı and the streams feeding it to complete its breeding cycle. Hiking and cycling are also among the activities possible in the area. The reed bed is easily reached as soon as you turn onto the Yeniköprü village road branching off the Bitlis-Ahlat highway.
