Nemrut Gölü Ramsar Alanı

Bitlis

4.6

Lake Nemrut, located between the Tatvan, Ahlat and Güroymak districts of Bitlis, west of the Lake Van basin, covers a crater area of 4,804 hectares. Declared a nature monument in 2003 and added to the Ramsar list in 2013 as a wetland of international importance, the site takes its name from Nimrod, the Babylonian ruler who lived in 2100 BC. The Nemrut Caldera, the world's second largest and Turkey's largest crater lake, contains water bodies large and small; five of them lakes; at 2,247 metres above sea level. The depth of Büyük Göl reaches 155 metres in places; fed by snow and spring waters, its water is cold and fresh. The hot waters and thermal springs around the lake are the last traces of its volcanic past. The rich vegetation of mountain steppes and birch forests stretching over volcanic rocks makes the area ideal for birdwatching, nature walks and photography. Lake Nemrut is 32 km from Bitlis and 62 km from Muş. The area is easily reached from the districts of Tatvan and Ahlat by following the signposts.
