Nemrut Kalderası Tabiat Anıtı

Tatvan/Ahlat/Güroymak ilçe sınırları, Bitlis

4.8

The Nemrut Caldera Nature Monument, stretching between the Tatvan, Ahlat and Güroymak districts of Bitlis, was placed under protection in 2003 with its area of 4,804 hectares; in 2013 it was also declared a Ramsar wetland. Named after Nimrod, the Babylonian ruler who lived in 2100 BC, the site contains the world's second largest and Turkey's largest crater lake. Inside the crater, at 2,247 metres above sea level, there are a total of five lakes, two of them large. The depth of Büyük Göl drops to 155 metres in places; fed by snow and spring waters, its water is cold and fresh. The hot waters and thermal springs around the lake are the last traces of volcanic activity. The mountain steppes and birch forest communities on the volcanic rocks offer a rich natural setting for nature walks, cycling, horse riding, birdwatching, fishing and photography. Lake Nemrut is 32 km from Bitlis and 62 km from Muş. The area is easily reached from the districts of Tatvan and Ahlat by following the signposts.
