İron Sazlığı Sulak Alanı
The İron Sazlığı Wetland lies in Eastern Anatolia, at the point where the provincial borders of Muş and Bitlis meet, in a special region where the Tigris, Lake Van and Euphrates basins converge. Spreading over a vast area of about 13,746 hectares including its buffer zone, the wetland has an average elevation of 1,605 meters. The lake surface intertwines with endless reed beds, mountain steppes and agricultural lands. Most of the wetland is covered with reeds, and the wet meadows surrounding it form an important habitat, breeding and migration ground for waterbirds. 12 fish species, 2 mammal species and 61 plant species, 3 of them endemic, have been recorded in the area. Endangered large bird species such as the crane and the great bustard use this place as a breeding and living area. İron Sazlığı offers an ideal route for birdwatching and hiking, and also allows sport angling. It was registered as a Wetland of National Importance in 2015.
