Başkomutan Tarihi Milli Parkı
Declared in 1981, the 34,834-hectare Başkomutan Historical National Park protects the lands where the Great Offensive (August 26-30, 1922), which determined the fate of the War of Independence, took place. Keeping alive the memory of the victory won under Atatürk's supreme command, this area is a sacred site of remembrance where 137,000 martyrs lie. The park consists of two separate sections: the Kocatepe section, encompassing the famous Kocatepe Monument southwest of Afyonkarahisar, and the Dumlupınar section, covering an area of 16,834 hectares within the boundaries of Kütahya. The Dumlupınar section contains the Zafertepe Monument, the Şehit Sancaktar Mehmetçik Monument, the Şekip Efendi and Büyük Aslıhanlar (Üç Tepeler) martyrs' cemeteries, the Dumlupınar Museum, the Dumlupınar Monument and the Atatürk House. Harboring examples of the steppe ecosystem, the park stands out with its geological and geomorphological structure as well as its rich socio-cultural values. Visits to the monuments and martyrs' cemeteries, hikes and the promotion of local products invite visitors to experience history and nature together.
