Büyük Akgöl Sulak Alanı
Stretching along the boundary of Sakarya's Ferizli and Karasu districts, the Büyük Akgöl Wetland was registered as a local wetland in 2016, and in the following years its protection boundaries were expanded to 2,957 hectares. A freshwater alluvial barrier lake, Akgöl was formed by the alluvium deposited by the Sakarya River, which flows about 2.5 km away. Most of the lake, whose extent varies with seasonal rainfall, consists of reed beds and marshland. The surrounding pastures, farmland and forests dominated by oak, hornbeam and linden provide a favorable resting habitat for waterbirds. The lake is home to species such as crayfish, freshwater perch, Prussian carp and bream, along with various birds. Thanks to the birdwatching tower and wooden walkway built by the Sakarya Branch Directorate, the area is an ideal spot for nature photography and birdwatching. The wetland, 38 km from Adapazarı, is reached via the old Karasu road along the Adatepe village route.
