Değirmenboğazı Tabiat Parkı
Declared a nature park in 2011, the 24.9-hectare Değirmenboğazı Nature Park is located in the Karesi district of Balıkesir, only 10 km from the city center. The area, entirely state forest in status, lies on the main highway connecting Istanbul and Bursa to İzmir and opening onto holiday regions such as the Gulf of Edremit, Kazdağı National Park and the Ayvalık Islands. The park has rich forest-covered vegetation. Through afforestation works carried out between 1957 and 1963, hundreds of thousands of saplings of more than 50 coniferous and broad-leaved species were planted, including black pine, Turkish red pine, stone pine, cedar, cypress and juniper, as well as plane, chestnut, walnut, linden, oak and Judas tree. Ideal for day trips into nature, the park has walking routes and paths through the forest where one can cycle. The area on the Balıkesir-Bursa highway can be reached by private vehicle, and it is also easy to get there by the municipal bus and public transport services running from the city center.
