Gümeli Tabiat Anıtı

Gümeli, Alaplı, Zonguldak

5.0

The Gümeli Natural Monument spreads over an area of 405 hectares within the boundaries of the town of Gümeli in the Alaplı district of Zonguldak, from which it takes its name. Declared in 2008 with 255 hectares, the area reached its present boundaries in 2016 when it was merged with the section containing the monumental yew tree, determined that year to be 4112 years old. In the area, which has a rich flora and fauna, Scots pine, pedunculate oak, Anatolian chestnut, beech, fir and yew trees dominate. Along the seasonal streams, water-loving species such as willow and alder can be observed. Surveys have recorded two endemic species: işyanotu and the Western Black Sea fir. Nature walks, cycling tours and scenic viewing can be done on the forest trails. There is no public transport to the area; after passing the town of Gümeli, entry is by private vehicle at the road junction marked with the natural monument sign.
