Sultan Sazlığı Milli Parkı
Stretching across the districts of Yahyalı, Develi and Yeşilhisar in Kayseri, the 39,057-hectare Sultan Sazlığı National Park is a rare wetland that harbours both freshwater and saltwater ecosystems in the heart of the Central Anatolian steppe. It takes its name from having been a hunting and resting ground for sultans during the Ottoman period. It is said that Murad IV stayed here for more than three months during his Yerevan Campaign. Because it lies at the point where the two main bird migration routes between Africa and Europe intersect, the area is one of Turkey's most important bird paradises. Salt lakes such as the Northern and Southern Marshes, Yay Lake and the Tuzla Lakes, freshwater lakes such as Eğrigöl and Sarp Lake, meadows and halophytic steppes make up this rich habitat. The park was declared a Ramsar Site of international importance in 1994. Birdwatching, nature tours, hiking and cycling are the finest ways to explore this unique landscape. The park is located around the village of Ovaçiftlik on the shore of Yay Lake, about 85 km from the city centre of Kayseri.
