Karatepe-Aslantaş Milli Parkı
Located in the Kadirli district of Osmaniye, at the transition between the Amanos Mountains and the Eastern Taurus, the 4,346-hectare Karatepe-Aslantaş National Park was declared a national park in 1958 and, together with Yozgat Çamlığı, is one of Turkey's first national parks. This early conservation decision was based on the area's unique Late Hittite open-air museum and the forest-and-water landscape around the Aslantaş Dam. The park's landmark is the Karatepe Late Hittite Open-Air Museum, dating from the 8th century BC. The bilingual Luwian-Phoenician inscription in the walled fortress built by King Asitawanda was a critical source that served as a Rosetta Stone in the deciphering of Hittite hieroglyphs. Reliefs adorned with sphinxes, lions and battle scenes are exhibited in situ, which makes Karatepe Turkey's only Late Hittite museum preserved in its original place. The park's natural beauty is concentrated around the Aslantaş Dam on the Ceyhan River. The blue-green reservoir offers a dramatic panorama surrounded by the Taurus and Amanos ranges. In the area, covered with Turkish red pine and oak forests, there is camping with a capacity of 20 tents. It is 20 km from the center of Osmaniye and 97 km from Adana.
