Küre Dağları Milli Parkı

Ulus, Bartın

4.9

Stretching through the untouched forests of the Western Black Sea, the Küre Mountains are one of Europe's most distinguished protected areas (PAN Parks) and a true wilderness refuge holding the "Platinum Wilderness Certificate". Declared a national park in 2000, the 37,753-hectare area is a pristine natural paradise where nature sets its own rules. This is virtually the capital of canyons: Valla Kanyonu, one of the world's exceptional canyons with a depth exceeding a thousand meters, and the Çatak Kanyonu Glass Viewing Terrace, which gives the feeling of gliding in the void, offer matchless views. In the region, an underground labyrinth with 77 explored caves, Ilgarini, the fourth largest cave in the world, is a masterpiece both geographic and historical. You can walk the 3-kilometer Horma Kanyonu Walking Trail at Pınarbaşı and rest in the cool waters of the Ilıca Waterfall; fly over the forest on a zipline at Bartın Aşağıköy, and pitch your tent and stay overnight under the stars at the Şenpazar Kızılcasu Camp Area. On the way back, you can stop by UNESCO-heritage Safranbolu or Amasra, the pearl of the Black Sea. The mountains' name comes from the region's millennia-old mining past: "küre" is the name given in the old language to the smelting furnaces that melted ores.
