Beşkayalar Tabiat Parkı
Declared in 1998, Beşkayalar Nature Park is located in the Başiskele district of Kocaeli, on the northern slopes of the Samanlı Mountains, about 12 km south of the Gulf of İzmit. Adorned with valleys, streams, high cliffs, cave formations and small waterfalls, the area has a rich vegetation cover formed by trees, shrubs and ground-cover plants. The five high rock formations at the confluence of the Sıcak and Soğuk streams flowing through the park gave the area its name. Covered with forests dominated by beech, hornbeam and chestnut, the park, with its deep canyons and varied scenery, is well suited to hiking, canyon exploration, climbing and angling. The area, where seven endemic species have been identified, is also quite rich in wildlife. On weekends it draws crowds of day-trip and trekking visitors from the surrounding provinces. The area is reached from the Yuvacık turnoff on the İzmit-Gölcük road, via Yuvacık Dam and Kazandere, to Aytepe; from there a dirt forest road continues to the canyon.
