Avlan Gölü Sulak Alanı
Stretching between the villages of Göltarla and Karamık in the Elmalı district of Antalya, the 10,062-hectare Avlan Lake Wetland was placed under protection in 2016 as a wetland of national importance. Located right next to the famous Çığlıkara Cedar Forest reserve at an elevation of about 1,050 meters, the lake is one of Turkey's most important inland wetlands of the Mediterranean basin. Historically the natural water catchment basin of the Elmalı Plain, the lake was drained for agriculture in the 1970s and regained its wetland identity through a nature restoration project carried out in the 2000s. The fauna inventory clearly demonstrates the area's value: 157 bird, 23 mammal, 15 reptile and 4 amphibian species are on record. Species such as the white-tailed eagle, Europe's largest bird of prey, and the wolf are present around the lake. The lake is also an important resting site where thousands of waterbirds stop over during migration periods; coots, mallards, wigeons and teals gather here in spring and autumn. The flora inventory, comprising 569 plant taxa, includes 108 endemic species, and five species such as the Elmalı onion, the weeping bride and Baytop's saffron grow only in and around Avlan Lake. The area has a designated camping ground with a capacity of 20 tents; WC, fountain, a simple shower and controlled campfire facilities are available, but there is no electricity connection. The area is 110 km from the center of Antalya and 30 km from Elmalı; those coming from the east arrive via Korkuteli, those from the west via Finike. The best period for birdwatching is the spring and autumn migrations, while for observing the flora, when the endemic flowers bloom, it is the months of May-June.
