Borçka Karagöl Tabiat Parkı
Borçka Karagöl Nature Park, in the Borçka district of Artvin, is a 368-hectare protected area declared in 2002. Karagöl, about 5 hectares in size at the park's center, is a landslide lake formed in the early 19th century when a hill collapsed in a landslide and blocked the Klaskur Stream. Under the effect of heavy rainfall and constant high humidity, the pristine vegetation surrounding the lake bears the character of a true rainforest ecosystem. The lake is home to the red-scaled trout native to the region. Since it lies on the migration route of birds of prey, dozens of bird species can be observed; mammals such as brown bear, wolf, lynx, jackal and fox also range around the wetland. On the paths along the lakeshore, hiking, cycling tours, nature excursions and photography tours can be enjoyed; there is a country restaurant for families. There is no overnight option within the area, but along the road route there are guesthouses run by local residents. The Nature Park is about 25 km from the Borçka district center and 57 km from the Artvin city center; the area is reached from Borçka via an asphalt and natural stone-paved road.
