Karagöl-Sahara Milli Parkı
Located in the Şavşat district of Artvin, in the inner reaches of the Eastern Black Sea mountain forests, the 3,250-hectare Karagöl-Sahara National Park was declared a national park in 1994. Its position in the transition zone between the Euro-Siberian and Irano-Turanian regions makes the park an internationally recognized nature spot with a high density of endemism; it is included in the IUCN's list of the 25 most important terrestrial ecoregions and WWF's list of 200 priority ecoregions. As its name suggests, the park consists of two sections. The Sahara section, 17 km from Şavşat, is the living face of the region with its rich spruce and fir forests, its highland-pasture tradition and its traditional wooden village houses. The Karagöl section, 25 km from Şavşat, is a natural lake formed as the result of a slope landslide; with its steep forested slopes, the small islets in the middle of the water and the layers of mist descending over the lake, it offers one of the most mystical views of the Black Sea region. Home to species such as the brown bear, wolf, lynx, red deer and roe deer, the park also allows licensed trout fishing in the lake. The Sahara section is reached at a distance of about 87 km from the center of Artvin.
