Spil Dağı Milli Parkı
Declared a national park in 1968, the 6,801-hectare Spil Dağı National Park lies to the south of Manisa, on a mountain massif whose highest point reaches 1,517 meters. In mythology, it is said to take its name from Kybele Sipylena, the goddess of fertility. Covered with forests of Turkish red pine, black pine, oak and juniper, the park is remarkably rich in biodiversity. 593 plant species, 78 of them endemic, and numerous bird, reptile and mammal species live here. The feral yılkı horses, numbering in the thousands, are among the park's most striking assets. Its role as a passage zone used by birds of prey, especially during the migration season, makes the park attractive for birdwatchers. The mountain slopes and forested areas provide suitable ground for hiking and cycling routes, nature tours and rock climbing. The park is about 24 km from the Manisa provincial center and 38 km from Bornova in İzmir.
