Altındere Vadisi Milli Parkı
Declared a national park in 1987, Altındere Valley National Park stretches along a narrow-floored valley rising up to 2,800 meters in the Maçka district of Trabzon. With its small cascades, rugged terrain, old natural forests and rich vegetation, it offers one of the most impressive landscapes of the Eastern Black Sea region. In the park's flora, 535 species belonging to 102 families have been identified, 10 of which are endemic. The forests, rising from 900 meters up to the treeline at 2,000 meters, consist of species such as Oriental spruce, Oriental beech, Eastern Black Sea fir and alder, displaying a plant cover that varies with altitude. The Sümela Monastery on the valley's slope is the region's best-known cultural landmark. Trekking and cycling routes, rock climbing, endemic plant observation, scenic viewpoints and trails leading up to the highland pastures await visitors. The park, 47 km from the city center of Trabzon, is reached by asphalt road; the roads leading up to the pastures within the area are gravel and dirt tracks.
